Day in the Life of Senior Associate

The following captures the “day in the life” of one of the group’s seasoned senior associates. She has been with Wipro for almost two years. Prior to joining Wipro, she spent several years at Deloitte Consulting working in the CRM space before earning her MBA

As a senior associate within the business process improvement competency, the majority of my days are spent with clients in business requirements and process redesign sessions. If I had a dollar for all the business process sessions I have attended across the various clients I have served, I could retire! The truth is I enjoy the challenge of helping clients move from a vague notion of how they wish to transform their business into something tangible that delivers results. At my most recent client engagement for a global mail stream delivery company, I was the lead business consultant. Since I was leading the business requirements phase of the project, the project team and I spent two, solid months conducting requirements sessions with over fifty different individuals from the client organization.

A typical day during this phase of the project began with me pulling myself out of bed at 6am to hit the hotel gym. I find working out in the morning clears my head for the day and guarantees I get my workout done. My first requirement session starts at 9:00am, so I arrive at the client site around 8:40am and meet with the two SAP experts from the offshore team who have traveled to the U.S. for the requirements phase. By 9:05am, we have ten client members in the conference room and another five on the phone. I have my laptop projecting onto the screen, and we are staring at an Excel file of existing accounting requirements. The two SAP experts are taking their own notes regarding how the requirements would be met from a technical standpoint. Additionally, for this client we are reviewing, modifying, deleting, and adding new requirements to a list that was created a year earlier (not typical). I read through the requirements one by one and ask for clarification when it does not seem clear what is being requested. The offshore resources also ask questions whenever they are unsure exactly what the client needs. For each requirement, I capture from the client why the requirement is needed and what benefit it delivers (example: reducing manual work). As I am typing their answers, they can see them “live” on the screen (thankfully they all found humor in my less than perfect spelling abilities). To make sure everyone stays engaged, I also infuse some humor into the meeting in order to spice up a tedious but crucial phase of the project.

By noon, with only one fifteen-minute break in between, we have completed the accounting requirements session. After a quick run downstairs to the client’s cafeteria, I am back at my laptop cleaning up the requirements file (including running spell check) from the morning session and trying to answer emails before the credit management requirements session at 1:00pm. The project engagement manager and I spend time reviewing the weekly status report and dashboard that he well present to the client sponsors tomorrow morning. At 1:00pm, the credit management session starts with four clients in attendance. Even though this session is supposed to run until 3:00pm, we end early at 2:40pm. Now, I have twenty minutes of “free” time before the 3:00pm collections requirement session. I use the time to grab a breath of fresh air before the 3:00pm meeting that I know is going to be very lively.

It is extremely common to have a day full of meetings where at least one goes slightly off-course. During the collections session, I have at least half of the fifteen clients in attendance telling me that they cannot review and validate the requirements until I provide a demo of how the new SAP-based system slated for implementation will function. I know this is simply not possible, but I cannot directly say that to the client. Furthermore, I know the offshore resources were not prepared to address many of the questions the client is raising. Therefore, I try to redirect the conversation by asking what challenges with the current collections system must be addressed. By the end of this rather trying session, we have a better understanding of what is needed, but we are still without a finalized list of requirements. The meeting adjourns a little after 5:00pm, but it is agreed that we will need to meet again.

After taking a few deep breaths and running to the vending machine for a Diet Coke, it is time to reconvene with the core Wipro and client team to determine how we are going to address the desire of the business to see a prototype of the new collections system. In the end, it is decided that since this is such a “hot button”, we will reach out to SAP to see what demo or prototype is possible. The project engagement manager and the two offshore resources agree to have a plan in place by the end of the week. I am thankful they can assume reaching out to SAP as I really need to focus on continuing to facilitate the remaining requirements sessions. We cannot let this derail the project timeline. At this point, I do have to readjust the requirements schedule to account for the additional meetings that will be necessary.

By 7:00pm, we have prepared the material we need for the requirement sessions scheduled for tomorrow. I have had my daily sign-off with the client to reiterate tomorrow’s schedule and make sure they are satisfied. Now, its time to decide which of the four restaurants I rotate between each week to dine at tonight! By 10:00pm, I am back in the hotel on my laptop checking email and working on the final business requirements deliverable. I do not make a habit of working each night, but it usually saves me from pulling a 12-hour day on Friday. At midnight, its lights out!
