Role Purpose

The Azure DevOps Engineer will design, implement, automate, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, Azure environments, observability systems, and deployment processes needed to support end‑to‑end engineering and application delivery.
This role focuses on enabling rapid, reliable, secure, and automated deployments across Development, Test, UAT, Training, and Production environments using Azure DevOps and Azure Cloud services—aligned to enterprise DevOps practices used in NSW-scale programs.

Key Responsibilities

1. CI/CD Pipeline Engineering

  • Build, maintain, and optimise Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines for application builds, infrastructure deployments, APIs, microservices, and integration components.
  • Implement YAML-based pipelines, release strategies, gated approvals, quality gates, and rollback mechanisms.
  • Automate packaging, promotion, and deployment of artefacts across all environments.
  • Configure automated quality checks including unit tests, integration tests, static analysis, and build validation.

2. Azure Environment Provisioning & Cloud Engineering

  • Provision and configure Azure environments (Dev, Test, UAT, Pre-Prod, Prod).
  • Build cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC):
    • ARM Templates / Bicep
    • Terraform (if applicable)
    • Azure CLI / PowerShell
  • Manage Azure components such as:
    • Azure Functions
    • Logic Apps
    • APIM
    • Service Bus
    • Storage Accounts
    • Azure SQL / PostgreSQL (if used)
    • App Services / Containers
  • Configure network resources including VNets, subnets, firewalls, private endpoints, and routing policies.

3. Automation Engineering

  • Develop automation scripts for deployments, environment setup, testing, and monitoring tasks.
  • Implement automated workflows using Azure DevOps, PowerShell, Bash, GitHub Actions (optional), and REST/CLI automation.
  • Create reusable automation modules for repeated operational tasks.

4. Monitoring & Observability

  • Implement monitoring dashboards using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights. 
  • Configure alerts, log aggregation, KQL queries, and performance tracking for cloud-native applications.
  • Support performance baselining, load testing, and availability monitoring.
  • Ensure telemetry coverage for CI/CD pipelines, deployments, and cloud workloads.

5. Build & Release Management

  • Manage end-to-end deployment cycles across multiple environments.
  • Build release checklists, validate readiness, and coordinate deployment activities.
  • Troubleshoot build failures, deployment issues, and environmental inconsistencies.
  • Maintain versioning, branching strategy, Git standards, and repository governance.

6. DevOps Delivery Support

  • Work with Scrum teams to support iterative delivery, DevOps ceremonies, and sprint commitments.
  • Manage Azure DevOps Boards including Epics, Features, Stories, and task workflows.
  • Create work item templates, pipelines templates, and reusable DevOps assets. 

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure DevOps Services (Repos, Pipelines, Artifacts, Boards).
  • Proficiency in YAML pipelines and pipeline-as-code.
  • Hands-on experience in provisioning Azure services and automating deployments.
  • Strong scripting skills: PowerShell, Bash, Python (optional).
  • Experience with IaC tools (ARM/Bicep/Terraform).
  • Familiarity with containerisation (Docker, ACR, AKS preferred).
  • Experience in setting up monitoring dashboards and logs using Application Insights & Azure Monitor.
  • Understanding of cloud networking, VNets, load balancers, DNS, and hybrid connectivity (VPN/ExpressRoute).
