Job Description

The OneDrive and SharePoint Migration Specialist is responsible for planning, executing, and supporting the migration of enterprise content from Shared Drives, Home Drives, File Servers, and legacy repositories to Microsoft OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online. The role ensures secure, accurate, and business-aligned content migration with minimal user disruption.

Key Responsibilities

Migration Planning & Assessment

  • Perform discovery and assessment of Shared Drives, Home Drives, and File Servers.
  • Analyze data volume, permissions, content types, and business ownership.
  • Define migration strategy (pilot, phased, or wave-based approach).
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and remediation actions.

Execution & Migration

  • Execute migrations to OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online using approved tools (e.g., ShareGate, Microsoft Migration Manager, PowerShell-based frameworks).
  • Migrate:
    • User Home Drives → OneDrive
    • Shared Drives / Department Drives → SharePoint Sites & Libraries
  • Ensure accurate permissions mapping, metadata preservation, and version history.

 OneDrive Migration

  • Migrate user data from Home Drives or tenant-to-tenant OneDrive.
  • Handle OneDrive client readiness, sync issues, and post-migration validation.
  • Support user cutover and minimize re-sync or data duplication issues.

SharePoint Migration

  • Design SharePoint Information Architecture (Sites, Libraries, Folders).
  • Support migration from:
    • File Shares
    • Legacy SharePoint (on-prem / older tenants)
  • Align migrations with governance, retention, and compliance requirements.

Post-Migration Support

  • Perform data validation, reconciliation, and sign-off.
  • Troubleshoot migration failures, access issues, and sync problems.
  • Provide Hypercare and L2/L3 support during stabilization phase.

Governance & Security

  • Ensure adherence to M365 security, compliance, and data governance policies.
  • Implement retention labels, DLP, and permission best practices.
  • Work closely with Security and Compliance teams.

Documentation & Communication

  • Create migration runbooks, status reports, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, site owners, and business users.
  • Support change management and end-user communication.

 

Required Skills & Expertise

Technical Skills

  • Strong experience with OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online
  • Hands-on experience in Shared Drive / Home Drive to M365 migration
  • Expertise in:
    • Permissions & access models
    • File share structures
    • Identity & Azure AD integration
  • PowerShell scripting for migration automation and reporting
  • Experience with migration tools (ShareGate, Microsoft tools, or equivalent)

Microsoft 365 Knowledge

  • SharePoint Online Admin Center
  • OneDrive Admin Center
  • M365 Security & Compliance basics (DLP, retention, auditing)
  • Integration with Teams and Exchange (where applicable)

Mandatory Skills: Microsoft Power Platform for M365 .
