Job Description
Job summary
We are looking for an engineer to design, develop and integrate software for next-generation optical network elements, Optical Line Systems, optical pluggables and coherent optical systems.
The role covers embedded software, Device Abstraction Layer, Hardware Abstraction Layer, hardware-interface software, optical line system control, pluggable module management, telemetry, management plane interfaces and optical-domain software integration.
The engineer will collaborate with optics, hardware, firmware, software, system architecture and test teams to build reliable software for EDFAs, Raman amplifiers, ROADMs, WSS, photodiodes, sensors, coherent modems and optical pluggables.
Key responsibilities
Develop embedded and system software using the JD programming reference: MATLAB, C/C++ where relevant; C for OLS software development
Build Device Abstraction Layer and Hardware Abstraction Layer components for I2C, SPI, MDIO, EEPROM, sensors, pluggables and optical components.
Develop EDFA/Raman amplifier control, gain control, Automatic Power Control, Automatic Gain Control, power balancing, alarm monitoring, safety shutdown and protection switching logic.
Support ROADM and line-system functions including spectrum allocation, path computation, flexgrid provisioning and real-time reconfiguration.
Develop optical pluggable software for CMIS/SFF interface handling, DDM/DOM monitoring, module state handling, firmware upgrade and power class management.
Support optical topology modelling, path computation, impairment-aware routing and optical power management algorithms.
Understand coherent optical modulation and performance concepts such as QPSK, DP-QPSK, BPSK, QAM variants, baud rate, spectral efficiency, BER and FEC.
Validate optical performance using Optical Spectrum Analyzer, optical power meters, oscilloscopes, VOA, optical switches, wave shapers, tunable lasers and traffic generators.
Minimum qualifications
Either “Optical Line System” or “Optical Pluggable” is Mandatory
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Photonics, Optics, Applied Physics or related discipline.
5+ years for engineer roles, 8+ years for senior roles, in embedded software, telecom software, NE software, firmware, Linux drivers.
Hands-on experience in at least two core technical areas: programming/system software, Linux/device interface, hardware-interface protocols, optical line system or optical pluggables.
At least one optical pillar is mandatory: Optical Line System OR Optical Pluggables.
Preferred coherent optics exposure
Constellation analysis and modulation-format selection.
ADC/DAC awareness, sampling rate concepts and ENOB awareness where relevant.
Pre-FEC and post-FEC BER interpretation.
OSNR sensitivity, reach versus capacity trade-off and modulation impact on line-system design.
Coherent DSP awareness including equalisation, carrier recovery and impairment compensation at conceptual level.
N = 6 required skill groups
Programming: C/C++ or strong embedded/system software programming as a key JD reference skill.
Embedded Linux / firmware / driver / user-space system software.
Hardware interfaces: I2C, SPI, MDIO, EEPROM, or equivalent hardware-interface experience.
Optical Line System: DWDM, fibre transmission, OSNR, dispersion, gain, tilt, EDFA, Raman, ROADM, WSS or optical transport.
Optical Pluggables: SFP, QSFP, QSFP-DD, OSFP, ZR/ZR+, CMIS, SFF, DOM/DDM, transceiver firmware or module lifecycle.
Debugging, test, lab, validation or product-delivery exposure.
Experience: 8-10 Years .
The expected compensation for this role ranges from CAD 100000 to CAD 150000 .
