Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement embedded software and system components primarily using MATLAB, C, and C++ tailored for Optical Line System development.
  • Develop and maintain Device Abstraction and Hardware Abstraction Layers to interface with protocols and devices such as I2C, SPI, MDIO, EEPROMs, sensors, optical pluggables, and other optical components.
  • Lead control system software development for EDFA and Raman amplifiers, including gain control algorithms, Automatic Power Control (APC), Automatic Gain Control (AGC), power balancing, alarm monitoring, safety shutdowns, and protection switching mechanisms.
  • Support the development and enhancement of ROADM and line system functionalities, involving spectrum allocation, path computation, flexgrid provisioning, and dynamic real-time network reconfiguration.
  • Create and optimize software for optical pluggables focusing on CMIS/SFF interface support, DDM/DOM monitoring, module state management, firmware upgrade processes, and power class regulation.
  • Contribute to optical topology modeling, including impairment-aware routing algorithms and advanced optical power management solutions to improve network performance and resilience.
  • Apply in-depth understanding of coherent optical modulation techniques such as QPSK, DP-QPSK, BPSK, QAM variants, plus knowledge of baud rate, spectral efficiency, BER, and Forward Error Correction (FEC) to influence design and testing procedures.
  • Validate and analyze optical subsystem performance using instrumentation such as Optical Spectrum Analyzers, optical power meters, oscilloscopes, Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA), optical switches, wave shapers, tunable lasers, and traffic generators.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Photonics, Optics, Applied Physics, or a closely related technical field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience for engineer roles and at least 8 years for senior positions, specifically in embedded software development, telecom software solutions, network element software, firmware, and Linux driver development.
  • Proven hands-on expertise in at least two core technical domains encompassing programming/system software, Linux device interfacing, hardware-interface protocols, optical line system technology, or optical pluggable software.
  • Credential in at least one dedicated optical area is essential: either Optical Line Systems (OLS) or Optical Pluggables, demonstrating comprehensive familiarity with their operational and technical aspects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address complex embedded systems challenges within optical networks, coupled with excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams.

Additional Information:

Mandatory Skills: Expertise in Telecom Packet Optical Network Element Layer 1 Software Development is essential to excel in this role.

Experience Level: Candidates with 8 to 10 years of relevant industry experience will find this position well-suited to their expertise.

Compensation: The indicative gross annual salary range is €51,000 to €70,000. Final salary placement within this range will be determined using objective, gender-neutral criteria encompassing experience, skill sets, and role responsibilities, in strict compliance with the applicable Contratto Collettivo Nazionale di Lavoro (National Collective Labor Agreement).
